Goldstone is man-made. It is not gold, nor stone, but molten glass. It is a type of glittering glass made in a low-oxygen, reducing atmosphere. It contains flat-faced, abundant, highly-reflective inclusions with a bright metallic lustre. Such glittering appearance instantly attracts attention.

Modern goldstone is created more commonly with copper flecks or other metallic compounds such as chromium oxide, cobalt or manganese. These produce a variety of colours such as green, purple and blue, respectively.
